How to Achieve Goals

5 Tips on how to succeed with your goals

Setting Achievable Goals

To get to the stress-free life I have now, I had to set some really big goals!

At the time, these goals seemed impossible for me to achieve; I wanted to give up before I even began.

So, my first tip is to:

1. Break your big goals down

Breaking your big goals down into baby steps, or smaller goals -

  • makes success more believable
  • enables you to see a light at the end of the tunnel
  • gives you regular wins to celebrate along the way

If you start to see immediate benefits, you’ll be less likely to give up at the first hurdle.

First, write down your big goal and then work backwards from there. What small, regular actions do you need to take to get to where you want to be?

Write the steps, or mini goals down. If possible, put time limits on each one. It maybe something you need to achieve in one day, 3 days, a week, a month etc.

It’s good to have a range of mini goals that can be achieved in a short time, say daily and weekly. As this will keep you motivated.

And there’s nothing more satisfying than ticking off each of your goals when you’ve achieved them. So, make sure you do so!

2. Make sure your goals are compelling

The most important aspect of a goal is that it needs to be really compelling to you. More specifically, you need to be emotionally connected to it.

You need to know why your goals are important to you, otherwise you won’t be motivated enough to go for them.

An extremely important aspect of setting any goal is to know why you want it.

You may have heard people say, “My big why is…such and such.”

Goals are simply thoughts and plans but when there is emotion attached to them, they become really powerful.

It’s therefore vital to discover the emotions around why you want to achieve any goal.

How are you emotionally connected to it?

What is, or are, the main emotional reasons for why you want to achieve your goals?

You could start by asking yourself the following questions:

  • When I get to the end of my life and am looking back on my life, what do I want to see? What do I want to have achieved? What sort of person do I want to have been? What legacy have I left?
  • What makes me come alive?
  • Where do I want my life to go?
  • What am I passionate about?
  • What do I truly desire in my life? And why do I want it?
  • What do I really want to do?
  • What makes my heart sing?
  • If I only had a year to live, what would I do?

I urge you to sit quietly and focus on each of these questions one by one. Some may resonate with you some may not.

3. Ensure your goals are for you!

ALWAYS make sure your goals are for you and not for someone else. Otherwise, you may end up with the life you don’t want!

How to achieve goals

How many times have you heard people say, “I got into this career because that’s what my parents wanted me to do.”?

Very often, this results in people working in a job they hate and that they find totally unfulfilling. This is sure to lead to a life of stress and unhappiness!

Maybe too, you’ve spent much of your life supporting other people’s goals. It’s very common, particularly for women, to focus all their energy on supporting their partner’s or their children’s goals.

Many women feel lost when their children have grown up and flown the nest. They feel like they no longer have a purpose in life.

4. Always take consistent steps in the right direction

Always taking steps in the right direction, however small, is much better than standing still and getting nowhere.

You will definitely have days that are more challenging than others. When that happens, always remember -

  • Be kind to yourself.
  • Accept you’re having an off day, and that’s ok.
  • Don’t sabotage your past efforts by giving up on everything.

You will always encounter challenges and obstacles, which must be overcome before you reach your goals. Regardless of whether you’re doing something that comes easily to you or not.

Positive thinking is very powerful and will really help you to achieve your goals. So, my final tip is to:

5. Work on your Mindset

Use techniques that will help to change, support and improve your mindset, so that you can remain strong in challenging times.

Training your mind to go from thinking mainly negative thoughts to mainly positive happy ones, really does make a difference to your stress levels!

I recommend that you –

How to achieve goals

  • Write your thoughts about your day in a journal every evening – keep it positive. Focus only on the good parts of the day, record your successes. Congratulate yourself!
  • Every morning, write down 3 reasons to be grateful. This can be really simple, like “I’m grateful for my warm bed.” Or, “I’m grateful having warm water to shower in.” etc. However negative you may be feeling, or however bad you believe your life to be, there is always something to be grateful for. Showing gratitude everyday will eventually train your brain to not give energy to the less positive aspects of your life. You won’t even notice the things that used to get you down.
  • EFT (Tapping) For more about this technique, and how to do it, take a look here.
  • Meditate - there are many apps and audios available to help you to meditate, if you find it a challenge.
  • Listen to hypnotherapy audios or subliminal messages – again there are many of these available online, which can be downloaded.

Following these few simple, quick, goals of working on your mindset every day, is so powerful for improving your mood.

And, along with the other tips above, it will help you to more easily achieve ALL your goals, big and small!
