It was 1994, I was 27 years old and a happily married young woman.

I had a job as a compliance officer at a stockbroker office in London. Every day my husband and I would commute 4 hours back and forth from work. I wanted to find a job closer to home, but there were no other stockbroking firms closer to where I lived.

I thought I had no other marketable skills as I'd worked in stockbroking since leaving college.

As a result, I was feeling unhappy and unfulfilled...


Purely because of the commute to my job and the fact that I seemingly had no control over it.

The stress from it all was affecting my immune system and I was getting sick left and right.

That being said, my husband, Tony and I agree that once we start a family, I won't go back to work anymore.

Our expenses weren’t too big so we could afford to live on one person’s salary…

Even though we would have had to give up a few “luxuries,” including our regular holidays.

Pure Ecstasy As Our Little Bundle of Joy Arrives!

Then we had our first child, Thomas.

Not only was I over the moon for giving birth to an amazing baby boy - I was finally giving up working in the city for good to become a full-time mum.

Life became so much easier and much less stressful for me.

I loved every minute of being a mum, being able to spend more time at home, looking after my little family.

Thomas was a well-behaved, happy child and always a joy to be around.

I enjoyed being a full-time Stay-At-Home Mom.

After years of surviving on only five hours sleep a night, having a new-born baby became a breeze and my alarm clock was now the happy gurgles of my beautiful baby boy.

I felt fantastic! I had everything I needed and wanted and my life was complete!

Or so I thought...

Then An Unexpected Tragedy Strikes...

Completely out of the blue and on a wonderful Christmas afternoon…

I got the chilling news that Tony, my husband, had suddenly had a seizure. After numerous tests, we were told he had a brain tumour.

Thomas was just 16 months old at the time.

As if that wasn’t devastating enough. A few weeks later, we were given the news that the tumour was malignant.

My darling husband and father of our baby boy had cancer. Yup, the big ‘C’.

My perfect life had been turned completely upside down and to say I was devastated would have been an understatement!

My perfectly healthy, strong and hardworking husband - the father of my child now needed 24-hour care...

So I took up the task of nursing him at home through the ups and downs of his illness. In addition to being a full time mom to a baby boy.

Tony fought hard to stay with us but it wasn't enough.

He took his final breath in our bed with me lying by him just 11 months after his first seizure.

There I was widowed at age 30, with a two-year-old son to take care of.

But of course as we all know, life has to go on...

My son became my reason for getting up every morning. My WHY in everything I did from that point.

So I picked myself up, dusted myself down and kept moving.

Chronic Stress, Fatigue & Burnout Start To Rear Their Ugly Heads

I started to feel the residual effects of the pure shock and stress of what I had been through, and was continuing to go through.

My health began to deteriorate as a result. I was exhausted all the time.

So much so that all I was good for was getting myself out of bed each morning to get dressed and to take Thomas to school.

And even that one task took absolutely EVERYTHING out of me to do.

Fast forward 6 years later…

I’m lying in the fetal position on my sofa. Sapped of all energy, drained, depressed, unable to even move my mouth to speak, even wiggle my fingers or toes.

So weak that I don't even have the energy to cry anymore.

The only thing that is still working is my worrying mind, racing and spinning endlessly on the dire situation I now find myself in.

My 6 Year Old Son Saves My Life, LITERALLY...

Just then my eyes fixate on the knife block on the kitchen counter.

You know those blocks of wood containing five or six different sized and shaped knives? Yeah, those ones. So here I am walking towards the knife block, mind completely gone, controlled by the spirit of depression & burnout...

Attention fully focused on nothing else but those gleaming stainless-steel knives, while moving towards them with vicious intent...

Then, like a flash in the pan, I become aware of my son, Thomas, standing right there in front of me.

Where did he come from?

I was so out of it that I didn't even hear him coming down the stairs and into the kitchen. He always ran down the four flights of stairs from his bedroom jumping onto each landing with an almighty thud. He NEVER walked.

This time, I hadn't heard him at all.

As I look down at him, what I see is something so shocking that it vigorously knocks me back into my senses.

Instead of Thomas, it was his daddy’s face looking up at me.

I instantly snapped out of my zombie-like state, grabbed hold of Thomas and hugged him with all my might.

How could I have even considered leaving this little boy without a daddy AND a mummy?

It was at that very moment that I knew I needed help.

He LITERALLY saved my life.

I needed to find out why I was feeling so exhausted, so depressed and unwell all the time.

Doctors Told Me To Learn To Live With My Chronic
Fatigue & Stress Syndrome As There Was No Cure.

This is where conventional medicine completely disregards the severity of this illness and are ignorantly dismissive of people suffering from it.

After being referred to an endocrinologist by my doctor, I was eventually diagnosed with M.E. or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

The consultant told me that they didn't really know why people got this condition and because of that there was no cure.
 
He told me that I would just need to go away and learn to manage the symptoms by getting a good balance of rest and exercise and by eating healthily.

That was in 2003, but nothing much has changed since then about the solution to this condition. To this day...

The same generic and heart wrenching advice is being given to sufferers of M.E.

And these stats go a long way in backing up my observations…

According to CDC.Gov…
  • An estimated 836,000 to 2.5 million Americans suffer from ME/CFS.
  • ​About 90 of them have not been diagnosed.
  • ​It costs the U.S. economy about $17 to $24 billion annually in medical bills & lost incomes.
That’s a WHOPPING 9 out of 10 people.

It is becoming a 21st century epidemic and the worrying thing is that more and more youngsters are getting it now too.

But 17 Years Ago, I Decided To Take A Stand Against Mainstream Medicine & Defeat This Stubborn Condition of Chronic Stress... Fatigue & Anxiety That Lead To My Burnout.

I was 36 years old at the time, with my whole life still in front of me.

I left the consultant that day with one thing in mind...

If they thought, for one second that I was going to accept this and let it be my reality for the rest of my life... They had got another thing coming!

The only positive at that time though was that I finally knew exactly what I was dealing with...

But never once was I going to accept that I had M.E.

I was going to do everything in my power to fully recover, despite what I’d been told.

I took full ownership of my situation and I knew that the years leading up to that point - the events that had transpired in my life and my lifestyle choices had led to this.

I felt it was my body’s way of telling me that it had had enough so it was shutting down.

But the battle that ensued inside of me after that would have even put a comic book hero on their butt. It’s like the condition heard about my determination and unwillingness to accept it and decided to beat me up even more.  

My digestive system, my immune system and my brain were all running on empty and needed lots of tender, loving care to kick-start them back into action. Certain foods, which I'd previously eaten problem-free were causing me to have stomach gripes, gas and bloating.

I always felt like I had a bad case of the flu, with my muscles aching constantly and my joints permanently painful.

I couldn't lie in one position for more than 10 minutes without becoming severely uncomfortable.

I was ultra sensitive to bright lights and loud noises and would become stressed if I couldn't get away from those situations.

Brain fog was also a real issue and I was unable to concentrate on reading a book or watching a film for more than a few minutes. My memory was so poor at times that I couldn't even find the right words to hold a conversation.


I couldn’t socialize as it would leave me exhausted for days and sometimes even weeks afterwards.

Even though I would sleep all night and sometimes during the day, I would always wake in the morning feeling like I haven't had enough sleep.

All in all, I became frustrated and depressed with my inability to lead a normal life and that caused regular meltdowns.

It was challenging, it was tough, the absolutely worst experience I ever had in my life and wouldn’t wish anyone to have to go through.

But you know what? Being the fighter that I am, I NEVER stopped. I kept going, and then...

Finally, A Light At The End of The Tunnel…

After YEARS of going through hell fighting a painful battle I was FINALLY on the road to recovery.

But it wasn’t an easy road even getting to this point. I tried, I failed. I went through deep bouts of pain, frustration, and even considered suicide…

I kept researching, the process wasn’t easy because of the permanent brain fog and you can't retain  information for too long...

Then I took MASSIVE action, also a challenge when you are dealing with a severe lack of energy.

The years after that were a rollercoaster, very up and down.

Some things I tried worked. Others didn't. It was often a case of persevering with something long enough to know whether it was making a positive difference or not.

Remember when the consultant tried to tell me all I needed was a good balance of rest, exercise and eating healthily...

That couldn’t be any FURTHER from the truth. It took me approximately 4 years to fully recover…

But I did and I have never looked back since!
For 13+ years now I've NEVER suffered with those consistently poor energy levels that come with stress and burnout, even though I have been through more stressful events in my life during that time.

Now I wake up at 6 a.m. after EIGHT hours of uninterrupted and restful sleep.

I feel bright and in a positive state of mind. It kick-starts my day on a positive note and always sets me up for a stress-free energetic day.

On the days that I'm not enjoying a lively breakfast meeting, I get to have a leisurely healthy breakfast with my new husband followed by an hour’s walk in the fresh air with our dog before starting work.

I now absolutely love my work and for the most part do it from home unless I'm out networking and meeting like-minded business people.

None of what I do feels like work at all.

Continuing with the lifestyle changes that I made 13 years ago has prevented me from suffering with poor energy levels or depression ever again.

Like always, life still throws curve balls at times...

But these days I take them very much in my stride and know that I can overcome anything when I put my mind to it.
